Canada, Mexico Advancing Space Programs

The Canadian Aeronautical Institute (CASI) is holding its 15th biennial Astronautics conference, ASTRO 2010, on May 4-6 in Toronto. This year's theme is 'Canada's future in space: A mission in collaboration' which will focus on international collaboration as well as cooperation between the private sector and government in space activities. 3 topical plenary sessions for ASTRO 2010 will evaluate how space exploration contributes to a safer world, a healthier planet and a stronger economy. Specific subjects within the broad areas of space science and exploration will be covered in 110 oral and 40 interactive technical presentations and CSA astronaut Robert Thirsk (TR) will give a luncheon lecture. The Mexico space program is also progressing with the recent announcement by deputy economy minister Francisco Pimentel of plans to construct a launch complex on the Yucatan Peninsula. With the technical support of Russia, NASA astronaut Jose Hernandez (BR) says Mexico will be capable of rocket launches in 10 years. (Credit: CASI, NASA)

Space Day to Promote Global Awareness of Space Education

On May 7, families and educators worldwide will participate in ‘Space Day,’ a global initiative to promote STEM education and commemorate the 1st USA space flight of Alan Shepard (TL). Since its launch 13 years ago by Lockheed Martin, Space Day events have taken place in over 21 countries and across 6 continents. On May 7, Spaceport Indiana will give students the opportunity to experience balloon and rocket launches and The National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC will feature 'Space Day: Looking at Earth From Space.' On May 8, San Diego Space Museum will hold its 7th Annual Space Day event featuring local astronaut Jim Newman (BL) and invited presenters from NASA, Lockheed Martin, Virgin Galactic and Team Synergy Moon. Gurudev Observatory in Vadodara, India will host 'Voyage to the Universe,' a lecture and sky watching event for students.
