Atlantis STS-129 Helping To Ensure Longevity of ISS

The Space Shuttle may be retiring after only 6 more flights, but the International Space Station is scheduled to continue operations for several years to come. The remaining missions, therefore, will be focused on supplying the ISS with a store of spare parts and delivering the large pieces of equipment only the Shuttle is capable of carrying. STS-129 is commanded by Charles Hobaugh, piloted by Barry Wilmore, with mission specialists Randy Bresnik, Robert Satcher Jr, Leland Melvin and Mike Foreman. Expedition 20 and 21 Flight Engineer Nicole Stott (inset) will be the last ISS resident transported to or from the station aboard a Shuttle, when she returns to Earth with the Atlantis crew. Atlantis will carry 12,360 kg of spare parts for the station's electrical, plumbing, air conditioning, communications and robotic systems. It will also carry a key communications element for the Feb 2010 demonstration of Space X's Dragon Capsule. The crew will conduct 3 spacewalks, extensive robotics work and a complex internal rewiring job to get the spare parts in place and prepare for the February arrival of the Tranquility node aboard STS-130. They will only have 7 days to complete these tasks, as Atlantis is not outfitted with the system that allows it to draw power from the station, and must return to Earth within 11 days. The Shuttle is now set for launch at 14:28 EST on Monday, Nov 16 from NASA's Kennedy Space Center. (Credit: NASA)

Canadian Space Summit 2009 to Highlight Collaboration on Space Technologies

On November 20-22, the Canadian Space Society will host the annual Canadian Space Summit at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario. This year’s event, aptly named ‘Multi-Use Missions: Opportunities For Collaboration on Space Technologies,’ will host several hundred space professionals and enthusiasts dedicated to helping the Canada space industry develop a diverse understanding of space exploration as well as highlight development projects across the country. Presentation topics include planetary exploration and astronomy, understanding human factors for lunar surface exploration, decompression illness in space, Canada’s role in aerospace medicine training and cost effective ways to fly space payloads. Canadian Space Society President Kevin Shortt (TL) notes that this year’s summit marks the 1st year in history to involve Canadian Forces in open dialogue with other members of the space industry. The Summit banquet will conclude with a talk by keynote speaker, astronomer and science writer Terence Dickinson (BL). Also taking place in conjunction with this year’s Space Summit is the Canadian Space Leaders Roundtable on Nov 20. The talk serves as a platform for space advocacy groups and leaders to meet face-to-face and discuss the role of Canada's future in space.
