Critical advances in space exploration and Earth observations will highlight the 2nd Global Space Development Summit (GSDS) in Washington DC on November 12-13. Organized by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the Chinese Society of Astronautics, Space Foundation and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), the Summit will promote global cooperation in space exploration and an international lunar base project recommended in the Beijing Declaration. The 1st GSDS resulted in the Beijing Declaration, which proposed “renewed global dialogue on the future of civil space activity…and more meaningful international integration.” CSIS President John Hamre and China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation VP Wu Zhuo (TR) will open the summit. Panel discussions include global cooperation in a new space era, cooperation among space enterprises, policy elements of space exploration and lunar programs present and future. Among the 17 speakers included are Bernard Foing (BR) of the International Lunar Exploration Working Group and Jia Yang, Director of the China Lunar Exploration Program. Global space enterprise creates more than US$251 billion in revenues, 69% of which represents commercial space activity. Accordingly, the Declaration advocates inclusion of spacefaring countries China, India, Japan and Europe as viable space industry leaders. As the USA and world economy have been suffering through a recession these past 2 years, investment in the emerging personal spaceflight industry has actually risen more than 20%. Seeking to keep up with other America states which are beginning to reap the benefits of the emerging NewSpace industry, North Carolina (NC) is hosting its 1st entrepreneurial space industry forum on November 12 at the Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) (B). The event is supported by the NC Aerospace Alliance, NC's Northeast Commission and NASA Space Grant. 2 primary goals of the forum are to educate state government, business and academic leaders about the economic development potential of the NewSpace industry, and to develop a strategy to create an indigenous NewSpace industry in NC. Prominent NewSpace figures such as XCOR CEO Jeff Greason (BR) and Odyssey Moon CEO Bob Richards (TR) will be on hand to provide insight on current trends and potential benefits of the emerging industry. Space business consultant Jeff Krukin will present a lecture and moderate a panel discussion on the economic development potential of NewSpace for NC.
