AAS / Wehrner von Braun Symposium Looks Toward Next Chapter in Space

Expanding the boundaries of human space exploration will be the focus of the American Astronautical Society (AAS) 2nd Wernher von Braun Memorial Symposium on October 20-21. Held at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville AL, the event entitled ‘Looking Ahead: The Next Chapter in Space,’ will explore America’s commitment to leadership in science and technology while strengthening global space programs with international space organizations. Top officials from NASA and the space industry will be on hand to discuss next-generation launch systems and options for the Constellation Program. Other topics include recent international focus of the Moon, commercial spaceflight, COTS, international partnerships / cooperation with space-faring nations, and findings of the US Human Spaceflight Plans Committee. NASA Project Managers Daniel Andrews and Craig Tooley (T) will give mission updates on LRO and LCROSS. Pratt and Whitney Rocketdyne President Jim Maser (B) and Jim Chilton of Exploration Launch Systems will discuss industry perspectives on space exploration. The symposium will end with closing remarks from NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. The AAS has long been recognized for its excellence in providing a platform for leaders to exchange information and ideas which have greatly influenced the US space program. 5th ISPCS to Advance Commercial Spaceflight

Efforts towards building a global commercial spaceflight industry will be addressed at the 5th International Symposium for Personal and Commercial Spaceflight (ISPCS) on October 21-22 in Las Cruces, NM.  Leaders in the industry as well as over 20 exhibitors will converge to advance this year’s theme: ‘Delivering on the Promise of Spaceflight for Mankind.’ ISPCS Chair and Director of New Mexico Space Grant Patricia Hynes (TR) will open the symposium, followed by keynote speaker and Under Secretary of the Air Force, Gary Payton.  Topics this year include university aerospace research programs as enablers for commercial space growth, the suborbital future beyond tourism, small satellites for orbital and sub-orbital applications and spaceport investments to enable commercial spaceflight. Spaceport Sweden based in Kiruna, Sweden, will be featured as one of the international exhibitors with the aim to become Europe’s 1st company to conduct personal suborbital spaceflights. 2 tour opportunities will be offered as part of the ISPCS. The 1st tour on Oct 20 will be at the NASA White Sands Test facility. Several workshops will be given on flight hardware processing, component services and oxygen systems. A tour of Spaceport America on Oct 21 will be led by Executive Directors Steve Landeene and Jerry Brown. The tour includes visiting the construction site, viewing of the runway, terminal and hangar and observing the existing mission control and launch pad.
