2 rovers and 3 orbiters are currently operating on Mars, and some experts, including the Augustine Commission, see it as the major destination for human exploration. 3 events this month focus on preparing for the next steps of Mars exploration. NASA Ames is hosting a Workshop on Sep 15-17 focusing on the global behavior of dust in the Martian atmosphere. The goal of the workshop is to synthesize results of observers, modelers and experimentalists to gain a better understanding of the processes responsible for lifting, transport and removal of dust in the atmosphere. Sep 15 is also the application deadline for the 9th season of field operations at the Mars Desert Research Station, which will take place from Nov 14-Apr 18, 2010. Initiated by the Mars Society, the project aims to develop key knowledge for human Mars exploration, and to inspire the public by making sensuous the vision of human exploration of the red planet. On September 9-11, Mars scientists from the USA and around the world gathered at the Faculty Club on ASU's Tempe Campus for a meeting of the Mars Panel for the Decadal Survey. Chaired by ASU professor Philip Christensen, the panel is developing proposals for USA goals and priorities for exploring the red planet in the 2013-2022 timeframe. Their final report is due in March 2011. (Credit: NASA, Mars Society, ASU) |
