ISU 13th Annual Symposium: 'Space For A Safe And Secure World'

More than 150 space experts from various industries, space agencies and academia will gather this week from Feb 18-20 in Strasbourg, France for the International Space University's (ISU) 13th Annual Symposium entitled 'Space for a Safe and Secure World.' ISU is using a modern definition of security for the symposium, which includes: helping to cope with natural disasters (BL), forestalling genocide, building trust among adversary nations and researching the current threats to Earth's ecosystem. With space systems contributing directly to all of these facets of global security, the ISU symposium hopes to foster a constructive dialogue between the different space sectors to formulate an independent, international position on the subject. This goal may be impeded however, by the noticeable absence of representatives from China, India and Russia at the symposium. Confirmed participants include space experts from industries such as Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Mitsubishi Electric Company; and space agencies NASA, ESA, DLR, CSA, JAXA, etc. Topics to be covered include: international goals and perspectives on security, civil security, homeland and national security, space assets and the space environment, making Earth safer and more secure. The symposium will also feature presentations on 'Lunar Contributions to Global Security,' and 'Space Powers on the Rise: The Legal and Political Implications of the Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization.' ISU has graduated over 2700 students from 100 countries since it was founded in 1987. Pictured (TL) ISU President Michael Simpson. (Credit: ISU, NASA)

Moonwalkers, Astronauts, Astronomers Reunite At 'Spacefest 2009'

'Spacefest 2009' is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first human Moon landing, and the International Year of Astronomy with a weekend of festivities in San Diego CA from Feb 19-22. Over three dozen pioneer astronauts, test pilots, movie stars, nationally known astronomy speakers, and authors will give presentations and be available to interact with space enthusiast participants throughout the event. Attending astronauts include Apollo 11 astronauts Buzz Aldrin (BL) and Michael Collins, along with most of the surviving 9 Moonwalkers. All 3 of the Apollo 9 crewmembers (Rusty Schweickart (BC), Dave Scott, and Jim McDivitt) will highlight their 40th anniversary reunion with a photo opportunity next to their original space capsule, nicknamed 'Gumdrop,' at the San Diego Air & Space Museum on Friday night during the Astronaut VIP reception. Carolyn Porco (BR), of the Cassini-Saturn mission; Peter Smith, of the Phoenix-Mars project; and author Phil Plait will give feature presentations during the event. 'Spacefest 2009' will also include the world premiere of 'Live from the Moon,' the new film that tells the story behind the live television that brought the Apollo Moon missions to millions of households around the world; and the world's largest Space Art exhibit, featuring NASA artists, and artists from TV, movies, books, magazines, and digital media.
