Galaxy Forum 2009 Advances Galaxy Consciousness Around Earth

International Lunar Observatory Association (ILOA) and Space Age Publishing Company (SPC) this week present the first Galaxy Forum of 2009 at the Ellison Onizuka Space Center in Kona on Hawai`i Island. Themed 'An Exploratory Forum to Promote Galaxy Education in the 21st Century,' the event continues a series of galaxy-focused meetings ILOA and SPC initiated last year in Santa Clara CA; Vancouver, Canada; and Beijing, China. The forums are conducted with the goal of advancing science education and awareness of our Milky Way and other galaxies. Presenting at 'Galaxy Forum Hawaii - Kona' on January 31 are artist Jon Lomberg: 'The Galaxy Garden (B) as a Model for Galaxy Education,' Kumiko Usuda of Subaru Telescope / NAOJ: 'Make Your Own Milky Way Models,' and Steve Durst of SPC / ILOA: 'International Lunar Observatory Galaxy First Light Imaging (T).' The Hawaii series will continue with forums in Kamuela HI in March, Hilo HI in spring, and possibly on the island of Oahu later in the year. USA and international forums possible for 2009 include San Jose CA on July 4, followed by events in Kansas, Vancouver, Beijing, Tokyo and New York, dates to be announced. USA Spaceflight Memorial Week Inspires Future Generation of Explorers

Memorial events across the USA will honor the 17 astronauts who gave their lives to advance human exploration of space. January 27 marks the 42nd observance of the spacecraft fire that took the lives of Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee (TR) during a preflight test of the Apollo 1 mission. Then on Jan 28, the Challenger disaster of 1986 that killed astronauts Francis Scobee, Michael Smith, Judith Resnik, Ellison Onizuka, Ronald McNair, Gregory Jarvis and educator astronaut Christa McAuliffe (CR) will be commemorated. The memorial week ends with the commemoration of the Columbia explosion during reentry on Feb 1, 2003 that took the lives of Rick Husband, William McCool, Michael Anderson, Kalpana Chawla, David Brown, Laurel Clark and Ilan Ramon (BR). These 17 astronauts risked their lives while reaching for the pinnacle of human exploration, with the dream of expanding human civilization beyond the confines of planet Earth. Their lives continue to inspire future generations of space explorers through such programs as the Challenger Center for Science Education, the Columbia Memorial Space Science Learning Center, the Onizuka Space Center and the Apollo 1 Memorial Foundation.
