The Canadian Space Agency (CSA), Canadian Space Society and Canadian Space Commerce Association present the '2008 Canadian Space Summit' on Nov 21-23 in Montreal, Quebec. The event comes at a crucial time for Canada's space industry, which has been described as being in a state of crisis lately, highlighted by the failed sale of major Canada aerospace company MDA. Accordingly, the theme for this year's annual summit will be, 'What's Next for the Canadian Space Industry?' CSA has built a strong reputation over the past 2 decades through its robust astronaut core and knack for robotics, particularly the Canadarm and Canadarm2 systems currently aboard the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station (ISS), respectively. These strengths were reflected in the recent appointment of chief Canada astronaut Steve MacLean (BL) as CSA President. MacLean was the 1st Canadian to operate the MDA-built Canadarm2 aboard the ISS, and has flown on 2 Shuttle flights. The summit will gather space advocates, aerospace executives, engineers, professors and venture capitalists to discuss the way forward for CSA, including space-related fields such as planetary exploration, astronomy, life sciences and micro-satellites. CSA science chief David Kendall will be the keynote speaker of the summit, while Canada Parliament member and former CSA head Marc Garneau (BR) will deliver the banquet keynote. The Canadian Space Agency will also hold the '6th Canadian Space Exploration Workshop' on Dec 1-3 at CSA headquarters in Saint-Hubert, Quebec. (Credit: CSA, CSS) |

International space agency representatives, entrepreneurs, investors, academia and space policy / law experts will gather in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Nov 16-18 for the inaugural 'Global Space Technology Forum.' Themed Space Technology Commercialization for the Future, the event will examine emerging space-related technologies and business plans and provide a networking forum for private and government space professionals. UAE has become a hotbed for commercial space activities recently, including suborbital space tourism and spaceport opportunities with Virgin Galactic, Space Adventures and others. Featured speakers at the forum will include (Top, L-R:) Arianespace CEO Jean-Yves Le Gall, Surrey Satellite Chair Sir Martin Sweeting, Space Adventures CEO Eric Anderson, XCOR Chief Operating Officer Andrew Nelson, (Bottom, L-R:) Virgin Galactic Commercial Director Stephen Attenborough, International Space University President Michael Simpson, Space Angels Network head Burton Lee, private astronaut Anousheh Ansari and many more. Participants will engage in discussions on international cooperation, Earth observation, space research and policy, and commercial markets and issues. Nick Webb, Director of sponsor Streamline Marketing Group, says, "The UAE is increasing efforts to become a serious aviation and aerospace commercial, technical and services hub ... and we hope that investors and entrepreneurs across the Middle East will be inspired to get involved with this fast growing industry."
